Why Rare and Roarsome?
Back in 2019 we welcomed our last baby, a little boy who completed our family. We were extremely lucky to already have had 3 beautiful daughters and now a Roarsome little son. He was born prematurely at 34 weeks, so we spent some time in the NICU. After a while something didn't sit right, i had that mum feeling in my stomach which was telling me to push further for investigation. Not only for my son, but also for our middle daughter that had delt with a lot of medical issues, a lot of learning difficuities and sensory needs. We were always told by health professionals and schools that she was just complex and nothing needing investigating. Until James was born, there were two many similarity's to just be one of them things, we knew how difficult it had been for our daughter, we wanted to do more. So in 2020 we decided to go for genetic testing. Then lockdown happened, teaching at home had began and we sore how much she was struggling with school work, with everything and with still no EHCP as it wasn't needed we knew we had to do more. We filled in a million forms, went with our guts and got the education side of things heading in the right direction. fast forward to 2021 and our genetic results were back, our babies had a very rare genetic condition called Kabuki Syndrome. Kabuki Syndrome is a very rare condition which effects 1 in 32,00 and its extremely rare to have two siblings with this. So this was the initial start of Rare and Roarsome. Fast forward again to now 2025, two of our daughters have now finished school, we have a daughter going into year 9 and our son James about to start year 1. We advocate not only for our children with Kabuki Syndrome but also for others, wanting or needing support.
